Psychological Assessment
What is a psychological assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is a one-on-one, individualized testing process performed by a psychologist. They are designed to measure and observe behavior, attention, learning, and socio-emotional and cognitive functioning, and typically include standardized measures of intellectual functioning, academic achievement, attention, and behavior. Psychological assessments are often used to arrive at (or rule out) a diagnosis and can help guide treatment planning.
Who are assessments for?
Schools and/or parents typically request psychoeducational assessments for children to answer questions like, "why does my child struggle with attention?" and "why is my child receiving low grades at school?" (among others). Parents will often notice their child having difficulty with reading, writing, math, or attention/focus, and seek a psychoeducational assessment to explore possible learning or attention disorders.
Adults also request psychological assessments. Often, adults present with concerns related to inattention, focus, and distractibility, and seek out an assessment to explore possible attention disorders.
